Blanket weed thrives in the same conditions as fish and whilst it not at all harmful it can become unsightly and eventually block filtration systems. Chemicals are popular in controlling blanket weed because they act very quickly to improve the appearance of the pond.

However, research carried out in our facilities has found that blanket weed should be controlled safely and this means that dieback should be a gradual rather than a fast process to avoid a pH swing which is detrimental to the wellbeing of fish. Another factor for concern is the use of metallic substances as an ingredient in blanket weed control products due to the dramatic kill rate. The prime factor that led LFH to produce Weedaway is the residual toxicity that can build up in the body of fish when exposed to metallic substances.

These are some of the historical reasons why we developed Weedaway as a completely safe non chemical way to control blanket weed in Koi and goldfish ponds. The product will very gradually change the colour of blanket weed as the enzymes and micro-organisms in the product lower the chlorophyll level in the blanket weed, as it is chlorophyll that keeps it alive and reproducing. The result is a paler green and then yellow plant as it weakens and ultimately dies when it can even become black in colour in some applications. The gradual action of Weedaway protects the fish from pH swings and avoids a sudden reduction in dissolved oxygen and other changes in the pond parameters. Weedaway is slow acting and the length of time it takes to complete this destructive process will vary from pond to pond due to the differences in water parameters and conditions. Water temperature is the most influential factor on the material and it works more effectively at spring and summer water temperatures or in heated facilities and is unsuitable for winter use.
